Kupang (ANTARA) - El Tari Kupang Meteorological Station, Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued an early warning of extreme weather that could potentially occur in all areas throughout East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

"The potential for extreme weather in the form of heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds will occur in 22 regencies/cities throughout NTT for the next two or three days," said the Head of the El Tari Kupang Meteorological Station Agung Sudiono Abadi in Kupang, Tuesday.

He explained that based on the analysis of the dynamics of the atmosphere and the sea, Rossby's active equatorial waves were observed in the NTT region.

In addition, the sea surface temperature is quite warm and the cyclonic circulation in the Arafura Sea causes the formation of meeting areas and wind bends in the NTT region.

The combination of these conditions, he said, is also supported by quite high air humidity from the bottom layer to the top layer.

"This condition can increase the potential for light to heavy rain which can be accompanied by lightning and strong winds," he said.

Agung explained, based on weather prediction modelling, in the next three days, there will be a fairly high increase in rainfall intensity, he said.

He appealed to the people in NTT not to panic but to increase their awareness of the potential for extreme weather and the impact of hydrometeorological disasters that could occur, such as floods, flash floods, landslides, fallen trees, and lightning strikes.

People who live in areas with steep topography or hills or cliffs, he said, should be more aware of the potential for landslides and flash floods when rains with light to heavy intensity occur for a long duration.

The public is also advised to always monitor the development of information and early warning of extreme weather from weather information services which can be contacted at any time via contact number (0380) 881613 or WhatsApp 081139404264 or can directly access the website: meteoeltari.com; email: [email protected], or the BMKG INFO mobile application.
