The Directorate General of Water Resources of the Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Ministry is targeting to complete the construction of 13 dams in several Indonesian provinces in 2023.

"A total of 13 ongoing (constructions of) dams, God willing, will be completed in 2023," director general of water resources at the ministry Jarot Widyoko said during a hearing with Commission V of the House of Representatives (DPR) here on Wednesday.

The 13 dams that targeted to be finished this year include Keureuto and Rukoh in Aceh, Lau Simeme in North Sumatra, Karian in Banten, Cipanas and Leuwikeris in West Java, Jlantah in Central Java, Pamukkulu in South Sulawesi, Ameroro in Southeast Sulawesi, and Sidan Dam in Bali. Tiu Suntuk Dam in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), Temef Dam in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), and Sepaku Semoi Dam in East Kalimantan—which will supply water to Indonesia's new capital, (IKN) Nusantara—are also targeted to be completed this year.

Meanwhile, the development of 12 more dams, such as Tiga Dihaji in South Sumatra as well as Bener and Jragung in Central Java, will continue into the next fiscal year, or 2024.

In addition, the ministry will build four new dams in 2023, namely Cibeet and Cijurey in West Java, Cabean in Central Java, and Riam Kiwa in South Kalimantan. Apart from dam construction, the PUPR Ministry will revitalize a number of lakes, such as Lake Toba and Lake Tondano, this year.

A budget of Rp14.04 trillion has been allocated for dam construction and lake revitalization for the whole year. Earlier, the PUPR Ministry informed that the construction of Sepaku Semoi Dam had reached 82 percent completion. Head of the ministry's task force for IKN infrastructure development, Danis Hidayat Sumadilaga, said that the dam will be one of the sources of raw water for the new capital city. The dam will be equipped with water intake facilities and a water treatment plant (IPA). The initial impounding of Sepaku Semoi Dam is targeted to be conducted in June 2023.
