Welcome to the Indonesia Water Challenge 2019!
With over 17,500 islands make up the nation, which is flanked by the Indian and Pacific Oceans, Indonesia has a rich history of trade across seas. However, Indonesian ports have underperformed mainly due to poor infrastructure. Shortcomings in maritime logistics and operations continue to result in poor connectivity between the islands, undermining trade and competitiveness. Under President Joko Widodo administration with the "Sea Toll Road" or "Ocean Highway" initiative, a more coordinated network of ports designed to better handle international traffic and streamline more local trade system in 2014, Indonesia is undertaking a major overhaul of its current port network and beginning to adopt Eco-Smart Port concept.
The concept of eco-smart port is a diverse, multi-stakeholder port system that respects the environment, uses advanced technology to reconfigure basic functions, re-engineer how activities get done to guarantee smooth and efficient operations, and substantially reduce energy consumption and waste. It distinctly puts emphasis on 3 interconnected subjects: energy, operations, and environment.
Port of Rotterdam is one of the best port infrastructures in the world. Located in the Netherlands and the largest port in Europe, Port of Rotterdam was the busiest port for 42 years before overtaken by Singapore and then Shanghai in 2011. It is the unprecedented example of an eco-smart port on global level.

Operations and technology
• Construction of Container Exchange Route as a link for container companies and minimise container exchanges cost
• Pronto, an online application that shipping companies, agents, terminals and other service providers can use to optimally plan, execute and monitor all activities during a port call
• Cloud-based Big Data using Internet of Things to reduce wait times, determine optimal times for ships to dock.
• Redevelopment of Maasvlakte's bird valley (The Vogelvallei) as a nature reserve for birds, and enlarged it to 21 hectares.
• 10% discount on the gross tonnage part of the port dues for vessels that score high on the Environmental Ship Index (ESI).
• We-nose network (combination of sensors) to effectively control unpleasant odours and identify any release of hazardous substances at an early stage.
You will be introduced to eco-smart port concept. Analyse current status of the port in Indonesia against the metrics of eco-smart port concept, consult to local people. Map competitive advantage and disadvantage of eco-smart concept towards the assigned port. This process will be going in Terminal Teluk Lamong, Surabaya, from 19th to 21st March 2019.
