Padang (ANTARA) - The Padang City Government and related stakeholders continue to work together to make integrated efforts in optimizing the improvement of water quality in the Batang Arau River.

"As one of the largest rivers whose estuary is also a tourist area, we continue to strive to improve the quality and cleanliness of the river," said Padang Mayor Hendri Septa in Padang, Friday.

According to him, one of the focuses being handled is the water quality index of the Batang Arau River downstream, which is still at level IV and is trying to be lowered to level II.

Therefore, he appealed to the community along the river from upstream to downstream to support the efforts to revitalize the Batang Arau River.

"The village head and related stakeholders can socialize and control their citizens so that they care about the environment and protect the river from the garbage.

We don't want people throwing garbage into the river anymore, because there will be strict sanctions according to the Padang City Regional Regulation (Perda) No. 21 of 2012 concerning Waste Management," he said.

In order to improve the quality of the Batang Arau river, the Padang City Government is assisted by a hydrologist from GIZ-Germany/Center for International Migration and Development (CIM) Mr. Michell Rohmann who helped handle the waste of the Batang Arau River through the Waste Management of Batang Arau River program for two years from 2021 to 2023.

The program is a follow-up to the twin city cooperation framework that has existed between Padang-Hildesheim (Germany).

In addition, the Padang City Government also received the assistance of 10 thousand Euros or worth Rp. 170 million from Germany for the handling of the Batang Arau River.

The assistance is supported by the Provincial Government of Lower Saxony, Germany which was given to the Hildesheim City Government to be handed over to the Padang City Government.
