Makara is initiated by Christa Nooy, an Indonesia specialist with over 25 years’ experience in coordinating sustainable development projects and an extensive network of environmental organizations in Indonesia and Asia. Local communities that actively protect their natural habitats are central to her work. With Makara she develops projects with environmental organizations, knowledge institutions, governments and companies on sustainable river management. She is one of the initiators of the RVO funded aksibrantas project in East-Java and currently consultant Community Participation and NGO liaison to this project. She works through the Dutch Nedworc Foundation, a trustworthy partner that handles assignments for independent consultants and organizations operating in the international development cooperation sector.

Makara would like to introduce YUYU River Education Islands to East Java, an initiative that is developed with NorthernLight, an Amsterdam-based world renowned Dutch creative agency, and the Indonesian environmental NGO ECOTON based in Gresik, East Java. Our pledge is to build a series of floating education islands that will travel to - and work with – local communities around the world to co-create solutions to prevent plastic waste.

The first YUYU education island is designed for and with ECOTON. See the brochure (Files menu on the Portal) for an impression of this education island. The target group in this concept are schoolchildren and students, but education activities may also address the wider community. Our initial plan was to locate this island in the Brantas river, which so far has proven to be challenging because of its status as a national strategic river basin.

YUYU River Education Islands would introduce a floating education island to East Java that offers the following cultural eco systems services: esthetics, inspiration and education. YUYU’s are designed to inspire, educate and activate. Inspire with the beauty of rivers, lakes and estuaries, and the life in and around them. Educate about the plastic pollution, health and biodiversity. Activate people with a learning by doing, hands-on approach. This is why these education islands are floating on the water. People need to interact with their environment in order to adapt and learn.

The estuary where Welang river and Brantas-Porong river flow into can be suggested as a possible location for a YUYU island. The estuary with its mangroves could offer an ideal location: on one hand, the mangroves show the seriousness of the problem at a glance because they are covered in plastics (see photos in Albums). On the other hand, they have potential to become a place for place for recreation and ecotourism, and to give people a sense of belonging to nature. A YUYU education island could help maximize this potential.

The YUYU education program would be managed by ECOTON who has a network of NGOs in Welang basin. Since part of the plastics in the estuary are coming from Welang river, the education program may include an interactive campaign that travels to upstream communities. See the Brantas XOXO campaign that is now running within the aksibrantas program.

Solutions for Welang:
